Difficulties between mothers and adult daughters can cause much distress to both parties. Mother daughter therapy provides a safe space in which to identify what is going wrong and explore ways to either repair the relationship or come to terms with a level of emotional distance that we may not have chosen - at least in the short term.
Therapy Together
Joint therapy for a mother and daughter can often be helpful if you are both able to talk about old hurts, power imbalances, communication difficulties and new ways of being together. I offer face-to-face joint mother daughter therapy in Brighton from my office next to Preston Park station. We would meet on a weekly basis.
Therapy together is more likely to be beneficial if both of you are invested in the process. If one of you doesn't really want to be there - or doesn't want the current status quo between the two of you to change - I would recommend individual therapy sessions for the person who does want a shift.
Please note that I only see two people on a face-to-face basis from my office, i.e. not where one or both of you are online.
Individual Therapy
If only one of you is up for trying therapy (or where there is estrangement), there is still much that can be done. I offer weekly mother daughter therapy to individuals who want to understand their own part in what might be going wrong between themselves and either their mother or their adult daughter.
As well as exploring what has led to, for example, conflict, distance and resentment - the context - individual therapy might also involve identifying what aspects of the relationship are within your control to change. Such aspects might include:
our emotional response to our own feelings
where we might set our boundaries
what is going on in other areas of our life.
Other aspects, such as the other person's behaviour or response to challenge, are largely outside our control and we might be expending a lot of emotional and physical energy trying to reconnect - or connect differently - to someone who is not ready (yet?) to meet us halfway.
For individuals, I offer either weekly online mother daughter therapy or face-to-face from my office in Brighton.
How To Proceed
To enquire about mother daughter therapy - either jointly in-person or as an individual in-person or online - please send me a message via my Contact page. My Availability page will give you an idea of where I have space to meet right now, but it is always worth contacting me anyway as I can sometimes juggle times around or recommend another trusted therapist local to Brighton.
We would start therapy with an initial consultation. At this 50-minute appointment there would be an opportunity for you to tell me a little about yourself/yourselves, to experience my approach and for us all to decide whether we would work well together. After an initial consultation, I take on most people who would like to continue with weekly 50-minute therapy sessions but, just occasionally, I might decide that a therapist with a different style or skills would be a better fit.
